Believe in Magic
There is joy in being a fan, and there is magic in being a girl.
Some may call it collective effervescence, like that feeling at a concert when the lights go down and your pulse is racing and you know you’re about to experience something you’ve never felt before in a room full of people who, for once in your life, know exactly how you feel.
But, it’s deeper than that.
It’s the blue light glow of a late night scrolling session on tumblr, laughing at the inside jokes that build upon years of niche references.
It’s exploring your identity as a teenager by living vicariously through, and sometimes sobbing over, fictional characters.
It’s waiting up til midnight for a new album drop and spending several sleep deprived hours interpreting lyrics as if they were made just for you.
It’s live texting the group chat as you watch the new episode of your favorite show together because there once was a time you all lived in the same house and watching it was a weekly ritual.
It’s doing each other's hair and makeup 5 hours before a concert, because that is where the real memories are made.
It’s watching women’s sports and celebrating their wins as if they were your own.
It’s reading the most heartbreakingly beautiful line of fiction you’ve ever read in an anonymously written fanfic.
It’s exchanging a friendship bracelet at a show with someone who resembles your daughter, and then turning around and doing the same with a woman who looks like your grandma.
It’s having a movie utterly wreck your life and emotional wellbeing, but forcing everyone you know to watch it so you can have just one person to discuss it with.
It’s logging hundreds of hours in your favorite video game while building virtual friendships.
It’s spending so much time scrolling Threads that you start to pick up new phrases that people in your real life don’t understand.
It’s sending the first woman to the moon and basking in the feeling of another glass ceiling shattering with takeoff.
It’s bonding with a stranger over a pop culture t-shirt while you wait in the checkout line at Whole Foods, talking about how that one show got you both through the darkest days of your life.
It’s asking your nail tech to match the aesthetic of your favorite album cover and her playing it over the speakers in the salon for you.
It’s meeting strangers on the internet, despite that being the very thing your parents warned you about, and bonding over the shared love of media. Because somehow, talking to virtual friends is the only way that you know how to be your truest self.
It’s finding inspiration in an unlikely place and remembering that the world isn’t so bad after all.
It’s a million little moments that remind you that art exists to be enjoyed and interpreted and celebrated together.
It’s something that I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to fully put into words. But I’d like to try. And to do so, I’m going to need to talk to some friends along the way.
Welcome to the Culture Coven, where we celebrate the magic of fandom and girlhood. ✨
About the Host
Leah has been hosting podcasts since 2019, but has been a fan of pop culture and talking since she was born.
She has never once been chill about any fandom in her entire life, and truly believes the world is made better by fandoms.
Her podcasting career began in 2019 as a co-host for She Will Rock You, which told the entertaining (and often hilarious) backstories of rock legends and also interviewed up and coming rock acts. In 2021, the show was named Best Music Podcast by Bullhorn.fm. In 2024, she began hosting The Struts Life alongside British rock band The Struts as a part of Pantheon Podcasts.
Now, with Culture Coven, she aims to foster a community where people can be passionate about the things they love.
